In this video clip, David and I discuss how you can cut the amount of time you spend fundraising in half.
Cut your startup fundraising time in half….
If you’re using the shotgun approach to fundraising, there’s a good chance that you’re wasting valuable time that you can’t afford to waste. Typically this means entering a lot of pitchfest competitions and networking as much as possible to find investors who might be willing to take a meeting. If you don’t have a target list of SmartMoney Investors, you’re going to waste a lot of time and effort pitching people who aren’t a fit for your company.
In this video, David Chang points out that you can cut your fundraising time pretty much in half by having a targeted approach. David should know – he is an Angel Investor with over 40 portfolio companies and he has an amazing track record as an entrepreneur with 6 exit events including Paypal and Trip Advisor. He also serves as an Entrepreneur In Residence at Harvard Business School.
If you have the right investors, their vertical market experience can provide you with a deep rolodex of contacts along with functional knowledge of how to get traction quickly. The right investors can quickly open doors that you might never be able to open without them.
On the flip side, if you have the wrong investors, the outcome can be disastrous. It’s like a marriage, but one where you can get fired, so be sure that you are targeting the BEST investors for your company.
Finding the best investors for your company is not a black and white thing. In almost all of the early-stage companies that we’ve seen, getting that core mix of the right investor and the right board is more of an art than a science. That’s part of why early-stage entrepreneurs need some help.
David Chang and Jeff (J.D.) Davids have given many workshops together at startup hubs like Mass Challenge and WeWork. They share a passion for helping entrepreneurs how to build a target list of SmartMoney Investors that bring much more than just cash to your deal.
